Cost-Benefit Survey on Workplace Accommodations
Longitudinal Study of the Cost-Benefits of Workplace Accommodations
You are being invited to participate in a research study of workplace accommodation policies and practices, the long-term effectiveness of workplace accommodations, and the costs and benefits of accommodations over the long-term. You were selected to participate because you are at least 18 years of age and are an employee of an organization that employs persons with disabilities. Your participation is entirely voluntary, so you can refuse to participate, or withdraw from the study at any time without penalty or loss of benefits to which you are otherwise entitled.
The purpose of this study is to learn more about factors that influence the use of workplace accommodations in organizations. There may also be demographic questions (e.g., age and gender). If you choose to participate, you will be invited to participate in a survey that should take no more than 20-30 minutes. As this is a longitudinal study, we may request you to participate in follow-up surveys.
The benefit of this research is that you will be helping us to assess the costs, benefits, and utility of workplace accommodations and understand what organizational policies, practices, and cultures lead to successful use of accommodations. Research finds that people with and without disabilities request and benefit from workplace accommodations and that organizational cultures that benefit one group often benefit all employees at large. The risks of this research are minimal. Some questions may ask about sensitive issues and there may be some minor discomfort associated with them; but, participation at all levels is voluntary. You are free to withdraw from the research at any time and/or to disregard questions with which you are not comfortable.
All information you provide will be kept confidential. The survey software is password protected and resides on secure servers, and all collected data will be accessible only to the authorized researchers. You may be requested to create a unique identifier to help us link any follow-up surveys you choose to participate in with your responses in this survey. This will contain no personal identifying information and will not be able to identify you as a participant in any manner.
Also, you will not be personally identified in any reports that may result from this study. All surveys will be stored (for 5 years after academic articles are published) in a locked space and then destroyed. The electronic data, which will not contain any identifying information that could identify you as a participant, will be maintained indefinitely for future research or audit.
If you have any questions, concerns or complaints about the research, you can contact the principal investigator Meera Adya at 315-443-7346 (BBI Director of Research). In addition, if you have any questions about your rights as a participant, or if you have questions, concerns, or complaints that you wish to address to someone other than the investigator, or if you cannot reach the investigator you may contact the Syracuse University Institutional Review Board at 315-443-3013.
